Woman held with the missing baby

MADURAI: The newborn baby which was allegedly missing from the maternity ward of the Government Rajaji Hospital was found and a woman was arrested in this connection.
Police said that Podhumani had given birth to a child in the hospital recently. In the early hours of Friday, she found her baby missing. Madhichiyam police registered a case of missing child. Special teams were formed. The police received information that a woman in Virudhunagar district claimed that she had delivered a baby recently and approached a hospital there. Suspecting her claims, the team rushed and found the woman _ Poongodi of Saminatham village near Sivakasi with the stolen child.
Inquiries revealed that she had stolen the baby as she did not have a child even after 10-years of marital life. Moreover, she had told her relatives sometime back that she was pregnant following which a function was conducted. She told her relatives that she had given birth to a baby. Hence, she committed the crime.
Based on the confession, a case was registered and she was produced before a judicial magistrate. Since she had claimed to have been pregnant, the police have admitted Poongodi in the GRH for a medical report. Further investigation is on.
